Frail Elderly

Everyone needs to see a dentist regularly and this is just as important as you grow older.

There are many factors which may make older people more susceptible to dental disease e.g. use of medications may have unintended consequences and some older adults may not have the physical or mental capacity to maintain good oral health.

We have an experienced team who will provide dental care for frail elderly patients who may now find it difficult to visit a regular high street dentist, for example owing to being in a wheelchair, having mobility difficulties or maybe with a neurological condition such as dementia or Parkinson’s disease.

We can also offer advice to carers and family about the best ways to help maintain good oral health as people grow older.

For some patients, visiting a clinic is simply not an option and in this case we can, in certain circumstances, visit you at home.

Home Visits by the Dentist

Community Dental Services has been carrying out domiciliary care to individual people’s homes and residential care homes for many years. We have an experienced team of people who understand the difficulties that can prevent people attending dental appointments for routine dental care.

Our domiciliary team can attend to your oral health needs within the comfort of your own home using specialist portable equipment.

There are 2 options to receiving domiciliary visits which are detailed below.

NHS Domiciliary Visits

We do offer domiciliary visits under NHS regulation although there is a criteria which you have to meet to qualify for this.
It is offered to those people who are house-bound/bed-bound and are unable to leave their residence for any reason i.e. Doctor appointments, hairdresser/barber, chiropody or social occasions etc.

NHS charges apply unless you are exempt due to benefit or exemption certificates. Please see NHS charges leaflet for details.

Once accepted on a referral basis into Community Dental Services, you would be added to the current waiting list. Emergency care will be given preference.  You will be contacted within a 4 to 6 week period with a visit date which will be within 18 weeks of the initial referral. A new referral will be needed for each course of treatment required.
